Kitsy received emergency vet care through the AKI-Have a Heart-Namibia Emergency Fund. We suspect she was attacked by a dog when heavily pregnant and needed 2 x amputations (leg and tail), emergency C section (her kittens died), crazy amount of stitches, long-term care at the vet clinic, blood transfusion, and medication cost only US$195.40! (Once recovered, she was also spayed.)

On Saturday the 12th of September, 2020, with covid-19 safeguards in place, GSPCA in collaboration with the Ga East Vet Clinic, vaccinated 113 dogs against rabies. This was done in an area called Dome-konca in the Ga East District of the Greater Accra region. 67 males and 46 females were vaccinated. This is a poor community with a high number of domestic animals. It is one of the community projects that GSPCA is focusing on for the rest of the year.

Haven shelter manager, Alex Ochieng, talks to Karen, AKI Director, about how the USPCA dealt with the coronavirus lockdown in Uganda, how they continue to rescue and care for cats and dogs during the pandemic, and the challenges they are facing. Alex describes the great need the USPCA has for a larger plot of land to build an expanded USPCA Haven to ensure the continued care for the many cats and dogs-in need.

The Uganda SPCA's shelter, The Haven, is full to the brim! About 300 dogs and 60 cats currently live there. Originally built to hold about 80 dogs and 30 cats, it was upgraded with beautiful, modern, spacious pens so that it could comfortably hold about 200 dogs and 80 cats. The Haven is a safe place for cats and dogs who were abused, neglected, and hungry, and who never knew love until they arrived at The Haven. We are hoping to purchase a plot so that the USPCA can have a larger shelter to care for more cats and dogs-in-need; so that they can have space to move about, exercise, play, and for those too shy, to find quiet places away from the noise of the shelter; where volunteers can spend enjoyable time with the dogs and cats; where potential adopters can meet prospective pets in comfortable surroundings; where children and adults can visit to learn about the joy of pet ownership; and that serves as a learning facility for animal advocates all over Africa and beyond.

Paterne takes us on a tour of the Sauvons nos Animaux dog and cat shelter that he created. All dogs and cats are spayed or neutered. You can see that they enjoy the outdoors-the shelter is like a big, beautiful yard. The dogs all get out of the kennels every day, most of the day, and can enjoy lives as dogs. Most of the animals at the shelter are there because they were neglected or abused, some arrived injured or sick, some pregnant. All get good food, attention, and care, and they finally get to live in a safe environment, where they don't have to worry about having rocks thrown at them, boiling water poured on them, being kicked, being run down by vehicles. Sauvons nos Animaux is a safe and beautiful place for dogs and cats in Bukavu.

SnA has a shelter with about 110 dogs and 40 cats. This is where the cats live.

Liberia Animal Welfare & Conservation Society works throughout Lofa County in northern Liberia. They are the only provider of animal care services in the county. They work in schools to promote kindness to animals. They meet with communities-where their staff members live-to create kind communities. It is only because of this intensive, ongoing, widespread work that they are able to influence the way animals are treated. AKI donors support LAWCS's work by paying stipends for LAWCS staff (approx US$50-70/month/person), covering rent for their office/clinic (US$50/month), and providing funds to purchase medicines and supplies for the clinic, food for their animal feeding programs, motorbike maintenance so LAWCS staff can move around, and any other LAWCS priority needs.

Kingston Community Animal Welfare feeds and cares for (provides spay/neuter, de-worms, treats for fleas, tick, and mange, and gets emergency vet care when needed) about 500 cats and dogs who live on Kingston, Jamaica streets. KCAW also helps impoverished families care for their pets by providing these same services. When families are able to provide for their pets' care, they are more likely to keep their pet and not abandon him or her to Kingston's streets. Ghana SPCA takes Humane Ed students on field trips so they can get firsthand experience with animals (cats, dogs, livestock, wildlife) and learn about animal care, animal care professions, and to strengthen the human-animal bond.

Deborah takes different routes each day of the week to feed Kingston's street cats and dogs. She also gets them spayed or neutered, de-wormed and she gives flea/tick prevention. Deborah has a network that spans Kingston: people who watch out for the street dogs and cats and contact her when they need help and feed them on days Deborah doesn't get there.

Deborah visited almost every day, fed her and the rest of her doggie group, and after 3 weeks, she has almost recovered!

She lives at this junk yard in Kingston, Deborah (Kingston Community Animal Welfare) feeds and takes care of the group of dogs who live at the yard. She was hit by a car, has a spinal injury and lost an eye.

Sheena was hit by a car and left at the side of the road in Kingston, Jamaica. Luckily, Deborah was driving by and saw Sheena, stopped and rescued her, took her to the vet. Sheena was treated and is 100% ok!

Students in Ghana SPCA's Humane Ed Program visit the Accra Polo Club and see horses up close and touch them-for the 1st time! The braver among them bathed and groomed a horse.

Driving to work a couple of months ago, Deborah/Kingston Community Animal Welfare saw this little girl soaked in blood and unable to move. "Tons of people walking past, driving past yet not one single person thought to help this poor little animal, clearly in pain too. I stopped and took her to the vet. She had surgery but will never have use of the leg. I had her at the KCAW kennel for 2 months and just recently found a wonderful lady who did not mind her disability- and loves her! Kingston Community Animal Welfare's Deborah rescued Sci-Fi, brought her to the vet, where her eye had to be removed. Animal-Kind International covered the costs. Sci-Fi now lives with Deborah, living the life of luxury.

Mbwa wa Africa rescued Whitney and her puppies from the street in Arusha, Tanzania. A few weeks after their rescue, the puppies are growing and enjoying their safe, happy life at the shelter--we're sure they'll easily get forever homes--how wouldn't they when they are THIS CUTE!

Deborah rescued Sci Fi after 2 boys kicked her and knocked her eye out! Deborah had been feeding street dogs in downtown Kingston, Jamaica, when Sci Fi ran past her, followed by the 2 boys. She yelled at them and grabbed Sci Fi and took her to the vet, where her eye had to be removed. Sci Fi adjusted well and is now living at Deborah's house, where she loves [to annoy] Earsey, another Kingston Community Animal Welfare rescue.

Ghana Society for the Protection & Care of Animals took 2 schools on a field trip to LEMLA Vet Clinic in July 2017. This is the 1st opportunity for most of the students to pet dogs (especially small, fuzzy dogs), learn about what vets and vet techs do, and to experience an atmosphere where everyone sincerely cares for cats and dogs.

With AKI funding, Ghana SPCA took Kindness Clubs on a field trip to La Vet clinic. Students were given a tour of the facility, learned about vet care and saw firsthand what vets do--including surgery, de-worming, and other animal care. Going to a vet clinic with their pet is not an experience that most Ghanaians have--especially a first-rate clinic like La Vet.
