Animal-Kind International and the 6 Freedoms-Ghana: working together to help horses

Here's how we, Animal-Kind International, work with our Partner Organization, the Six Freedoms, to help horses in Ghana.

Here's what that means for the horses.

We helped 6F organize and fund Horse Care Teams to inspect the informal stables around Accra, build relationships, identify their needs (of the horses and the caretakers), and help them with advice, supplies, and basic care. We covered professional fees for the grooms who take care of 6F's rescued horses (see previous AKI Blog posts to read their stories), Boga, Mr Key, Arrowboy, Merlin. Plus we covered farrier fees for hoof care for Boga, Mr Key, and Arrowboy. We cover vet care too. Which meant that Arrowboy and Merlin could be gelded! And that means taking care of them and placing them in permanent homes will be much easier.

We provide the funding for horse feed for the four rescued horses. Because of their poor condition when rescued, they need special feed and supplements.

The 6 Freedoms organized farrier stations, funded by Animal-Kind International. The farrier services help relieve pain and injuries to the beach horses who take locals and tourists for beach rides. This is the first time these horses are receiving care, which includes much more than filing hooves. Beach horses work hard, their caretakers earn money from them, yet until now, the caretakers never took care of the horses' hooves, nor any other part of the horses they rely on!

At the farrier station in February, 12 horses were treated and 6F distributed supplies, while Moses and Jonathan give advice on horse care.

As 6F tries to do at each farrier station, gear was distributed to help horses remain healthy and comfortable at least until the next farrier station.

6F hopes to re-home the four remaining rescued horses. That would allow them to focus on caring for the horses in the communities, mainly at the informal stables. It could take a while to find good homes though, and until then, we'll be making sure these four horses, who have already suffered far too much, are getting the best of care.
