AKI News: August 2025

A Horse Rescue Fund 4 Ghana

We need to act fast when Ulla (the 6 Freedoms-Ghana) gets in touch with us about a horse in need of rescue. Once they realize that having a horse is expensive, too much trouble, and they’ve lost interest, neglectful owners will often agree to sell a horse to our Partner Organization, the 6 Freedoms (@thesixfreedoms). But any hesitation on 6F’s part can lead to demands for more money. Instead, if we create and endow a 6 Freedoms Horse Rescue Fund 4 Ghana, Ulla and her team will know that they have the ability to rescue horses in desperate need when the opportunity arises. That’s what we were able to do for Arrowboy (photos below left: Arrowboy is safe and getting good care in the hands of 6F and groom Eddie).

The 6 Freedoms has been helping Arrowboy since 2021 when he was at Kingdom Stables in Kokrobite. At that time, he was covered with abscesses from an unprofessionally given injection, a common problem in Ghana. Over the years, Arrowboy was moved around to different stables, the grooms who care for him changed. And then, a couple of months ago, 6F discovered that despite his saddle sores, Arrowboy was being used for beach rides (grooms earn money by giving horse rides to tourists and locals). Arrowboy was so neglected that the old abscesses on his chest opened up again (photo above right). 6F knew they needed to act quickly before it was too late for Arrowboy.

Most owners will agree to sell a horse for under US$500.

We think that’s certainly worth it to keep an animal from a life of suffering (for example, read this AKI Blog post). Ulla and her team take many things into consideration before they agree to a rescue a horse; e.g., the condition of the horse, the price, whether they have a safe place for the horse and can provide the needed vet care, and they make sure that the owner understands that this is a legal arrangement and is not a reward for abuse.

Ulla and her 6F team have already identified several other horses in need of rescue. That’s only the 1st step, and financing a 6F Horse Rescue Fund 4 Ghana will get them several steps farther down the road of actually rescuing them.

Our 2025 grantees are starting their AKI-funded projects. One of our 5 from Latin America/Caribbean (LAC), The Rivadeneira Sterilization Center in Ecuador, has created their educational material and is now preparing to sterilize dogs and cats in San Pablo de Atenas. They chose this location because during their previous sterilization campaign, they saw how animals in this rural town are mistreated and abandoned on roads and knew they had so much more work to do. This time, they have the support of a congregation of nuns who will give them a space in their house for the surgeries. The Sterilization Center created this wonderful video about the upcoming AKI-financed campaign—let me know if you love it as much as I do (which is a lot)!:

Our Partner Organization, Helping Hands for Hounds of Honduras is working closely with another one of our 2025 grantees, Amor y Abrigo. Amor y Abrigo will hold a spay/neuter campaign in partnership with Universidad Zamorano to help them humanely manage the roaming cat and dog populations on campus.

Funded almost exclusively by Animal-Kind International, Kingston Community Animal Welfare continues to rescue, provide vet care, and spay/neuter dogs and cats throughout Kingston.

Liberia Humane Education

With funding from AKI, our Partner Organization, Liberia Animal Welfare & Conservation Society sponsors Humane Education in schools in Zorzor and Voinjama districts. Molubah and Survival (left) are an example of LAWCS’ successful program. Read about Molubah and Survival and other students whose lives have been changed by the LAWCS Humane Ed Program in this AKI Blog post.

We also support Liberia Animal Welfare & Conservation Society’s community outreach clinics, each of which treats over 200 dogs and cats. Most people in rural Liberia are unable to afford a private vet, and private vets are very few and far between--plus they don't reach the communities that LAWCS serves.

Our pie charts are live!

On each of our Partner Organization’s page, you’ll find the latest pie chart, like this one (right), How Bam (Uganda) spent your 2025 donations through June.

An update from our Partner Organization, Sauvons nos Animaux-Congo

A person shovels soil into a wheelbarrow on a dirt path beside a brick wall in Democratic Republic of Congo.

During the war, heavy rains caused landslides at the Sauvons nos Animaux shelter, but because of the danger posed by roaming militias and the military, the staff couldn’t risk clearing the soil away, so it continued to accumulate. The only thing holding the eroded soil at bay was the AKI-funded wall! A few days ago, during a lull in the fighting, SnA staff cleared the soil from behind the shelter wall (photo above). Imagine the damage that was averted….if not for the wall, the soil would have buried the kennels and could have done the same to the cats and dogs. Watch for September’s newsletter when we’ll have lots more from Sauvons nos Animaux.

Thank you SO much for your kind support.

You make all of this possible.

Gratefully yours,

Karen Menczer, Founder/Director
