SPCA Grahamstown's 3rd grant from Animal-Kind International, awarded in 2024, attracted the attention of some of our supporters and they created the Good D.O.G. (Dogs of Grahamstown) Fund with a donation to AKI so that SPCA-G could continue their spay/neuter and emergency vet care work in under-served communities around Grahamstown/Makhanda.
Specifically, the Good DOG Fund, which topped up the SPCA's 2024 grant from Animal-Kind International, was given to the SPCA Grahamstown - South Africa to assist animals that their Inspectorate team came across in their fieldwork. Treatments are followed by sterilization – that’s the deal! This fund has not only assisted the SPCA staff to provide veterinary treatments and sterilizations for many sick or injured animals, but is has also saved the lives of animals whose only option may be euthanasia due to lack of funds for veterinary treatment – on the part of the owner as well as the SPCA. The Good DOG Fund has lightened the emotional load on the SPCA Grahamstown staff by providing positive outcomes for animals (and their owners) who need and deserve assistance.
The Fund has been wildly successful and has allowed the SPCA to continue their efforts through September 2025, an extension of about 9 months, helping almost 200 dogs and cats (yes, the Good DOG Fund helps cats!), a cow, and a donkey.
We posted about some of the dogs and cats helped by the Good DOG Fund here:
As you can see from the collage, it would be impossible to tell all their stories. But this poster does a good job of it:

Instead, we'll skip to the next bit of good news:
Our donors came through with Good DOG Fund 2 for the SPCA Grahamstown-South Africa!
When we told Michelle at SPCA Grahamstown the news that the fund would be replenished, she wrote,
"I had the pleasure of informing our two Inspectors about the extension of the Good D.O.G. Fund this morning – I popped up to the kennels on my way to work and they had just loaded a very difficult dog into the vehicle. She was pregnant and on her way to the vet to be spayed. They were exhausted and the day had just begun! Needless to say, their day certainly brightened with the wonderful news and they asked me to convey their sincere appreciation to AKI and all involved😊."
Michelle asked us to share these two lovely stories as examples of what our much-needed support has accomplished:
Puppy had delivered her first two puppies and then spent the next two days in labour, without any success. Her desperate owner contacted the SPCA Grahamstown for assistance. When the SPCA team got there, Puppy was passing a dreadful smelling, green discharge. She was rushed to the vet with her 2 tiny little pups, and an emergency spay was performed. The decomposing puppies were removed and Puppy was put on strong medication. Puppy looks like an angel, but she is very protective over her pups and was not scared to use her teeth! Puppy’s veterinary costs were covered by the Good D.O.G. fund, a top-up grant given to the SPCA Grahamstown by Animal-Kind International. Thanks to the Good D.O.G. fund, Puppy’s life was saved and she is now safely back home nursing her two little pups.
Max was severely constipated from an accumulation of bones and although bones can cause terrible complications, many dogs in lower income areas of South Africa rely on bones as a main source of food. He was examined under anaesthetic at the vet clinic and given an enema and put on a drip. He returned to the SPCA Grahamstown kennels for monitoring and to get things moving … and Max did not disappoint! He made a full recovery and was neutered a few days later before returning home. The Good D.O.G. fund, a top-up grant to the SPCA Grahamstown from Animal-Kind International made Max’s treatment and sterilization possible.
We thank SPCA Grahamstown for their amazing work and our donors for their amazing and generous support. Together you have made this happen.
