Twala Trust in Zimbabwe was a 2-time AKI grantee and then became an AKI Partner Organization in 2024. As a Partner Organization, Twala can use AKI funds for whatever they need to, as long as the need is in support of animal welfare. Also, we created the Doggy Tuesday Pet Food Fund (in memory of Elaine Law) specifically to ensure that the ~600 dogs from the local community will always have food when they visit Twala on weekly Doggy Tuesdays.
We--Animal-Kind International and our Partner Organization Twala Trust-Zimbabwe posted these stories and pictures on our social media sites, but we can't get enough of them. So here they are again, in case you missed them....
When you're so tiny that even the littlest pajamas are too big! This is Panda - he's wintering at Twala with his brother Tiger. Panda survived parvovirus thanks to the determined efforts of Twala's vet team, and is getting all the love, good food, and warmth he needs during Zimbabwe's winter. When he's bigger and stronger he will return home, and Twala will continue to care for him through their Doggy Tuesday program. From Sarah, "We are so grateful for the support of Animal-Kind International in giving dogs like Panda the life they deserve."
Little Tiger came to Twala through Doggy Tuesday, needing a bit of extra care. She spent a week getting really good food, lots of love, vaccinations, and de-worming, and then was happily reunited with her family.
Sweet Flynn was rescued off the streets of Harare, where he was dumped. He is very old, has arthritis and very few teeth, but is so happy and comfortable at Twala. From Sarah, "Thank you for covering the cost of the arthritis medication, Inflacam, that makes his life so much better."
These 3 darlings, Sniper, Shumba, and Laser are 12 year old siblings, so well cared for, never miss a Doggy Tuesday, and love the All Day All You Can Eat Doggy Buffet provided by Animal-Kind International supporters.
The newest Doggy Tuesday members, Panda and Tiger, with American volunteer Eden Werner. They are replacing two very elderly dogs who joined the Waggley Tail Club for a well earned retirement.
Sprinkles guarding the library and the children. She decided she should be the only dog under the table and no one was going to argue!
At Doggy Tuesday, those who need it, like Okavango, get tick and flea treatment thanks to kennel hand Ali.
Mr Julius with his dog, Casper made the journey on foot, on crutches, to ask if he could get extra food for Casper as he obviously struggles now to get to Doggy Tuesday. Twala will now deliver food to his homestead. He's been added to Twala's community outreach list so Casper can still get the care he needs, and be a companion and protector for his elderly owner.
This very old, very small dog. Kotyo, was brought to Twala with a high temperature, distended abdomen, and very malnourished. Twala will do their best to pull this darling girl through. She's one of those dogs you just instantly fall in love with - so brave and dignified with her whole life story written on her scarred little face.
Twala took in this darling old Doggy Tuesday dog, surrendered to Twala because he has many issues and would be more comfortable at the Trust sanctuary. Tiger has arthritis and dental issues and Twala can keep him comfortable and cozy. Sarah wrote, "Thank you for all the benefits he has had from AKI to help him live a long and good life."
This boy, Shumba, came to Doggy Tuesday starting a few months ago. He had suffered a home castration and the results were horrific. He had a massive infection and was in terrible pain. He was brought in by a young dog owner who persuaded the owner to let him bring him to Twala, and he carried him (he weighs 16kg) to Doggy Tuesday. He is now healed after recuperating at Twala's sanctuary.
Coming back from Doggy Tuesday fully loaded! This "doggy wagon" was one of the 1st things that we funded for Twala Trust after they became an AKI Partner Organization in 2024 and it's still on the road, Twala is still getting so much benefit from it.
